Michelle will enjoy a four day visit to the Spanish coast, starting on Wednesday, where she is staying in a five star hotel, Villa Padierna situated in the small town of Benahavis, in the Marbella region.

Up on the hills, the Villa Padierna – whose rooms cost up to €5,000 (£4,150) a night – is awaiting more than just Mrs Obama, whose encourage are reported to have booked 30 rooms. Antonio Banderas, Eva Longoria and Boris Becker are also due to attend a charity gala. One lunchtime last week, Cilla Black sat, glass of champagne in hand, laughing with her friends.

The Hotel Villa Padierna is situated in los Flamingos Golf Course, (Benahavis). The whole area is one of the best places for golf lovers as there is 12 golf courses around the place. This is an exclusive area which is growing daily with the construction of new developments, as Alanda, Tee5 los Flamingos, El lago etc… (for more information visit our web page www.lacostapropertysolutions.com).

Thirty rooms have been reserved for the party at the luxury golf and spa resort. During the break Mrs Obama is set to visit the Spanish Royal Family to pay an official visit to King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia. However the White House have denied reports that she will be joined by president Obama following claims in Spanish media that he would join her for the visit.

The arrival of Mrs Obama will be a big boost to the city of Marbella which has fought off negative press in recent years following the illegal property scam lead by the former mayor. After their trip to Spain, Michelle and Sasha will visit the Gulf Coast of Florida before heading to the New England resort island of Martha’s Vineyards.

In conjunction with ASPANDEM, an association specifically set up to help disabled people living on the Costa del Sol, La Quinta Golf in Marbella has launched an academy for people aged between the ages of 18 and 35 to help teach them the region’s favourite and most popular sport. The specialised lessons on offer take in the theoretical and practical aspects of the game, as well as the rules and golfing etiquette, and more than 20 members of ASPANDEM are said to be taking part.

Taking place every Tuesday and Thursday morning, the series of lessons runs up until the end of June, when the organisers have arranged a small tournament where those who have taken part can display their new skills. The La Quinta Golf Academy is not only committed to offering continuing support to the disabled, however, but also to the young people of the Costa del Sol who wish to integrate more closely with the local society.

Whether they suffer from a disability or not, both La Quinta Golf and the La Quinta Tigers Junior Academy have programmes in place for children from as young as six years of age to help them learn or improve their game. La Quinta Tigers runs lessons throughout the whole year and the end of each ‘term’ sees tournaments being held and prizes being awarded to the top performers.

With golf being such a focal activity on the Costa del Sol, the programmes on offer provide a superb opportunity for disabled and able-bodied youngsters alike to really get ahead of their game!

Recent claims by an online travel agent suggest that British tourists are turning their backs on the Costa del Sol because it is too British. Spain is amongst five foreign destinations that the company says are a turn-off because of the presence of so many other Brits, although ex-pat business owners say that far from seeing a drop-off in trade, they are actually doing more business than ever. In addition, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) reports that Spain is still the European destination most visited by British tourists, with 10 million making it their choice in 2009 alone.

The Costa del Sol has, of course, long since been a tremendously popular holiday destination for British holidaymakers and also for those looking to buy property on the Costa del Sol. Ever since the 1960s when Torremolinos first became a firm favourite, the convenience of Malaga Airport and the low flight prices have encouraged millions of Brits to spend their holidays in the vast number of resorts that the region now has to offer. Inevitably, the preponderance of British tourists has encouraged many businesses to adapt their offerings in order to take into account British tastes and preferences, but actually as far as most visitors are concerned, this has never presented a problem.

Many people, when they are abroad, feel comforted by the sound of a familiar language or the ability to buy food and products which they recognise, but the real point here is that every visitor has a choice. You only have to travel a few kilometres inland from any of the popular resorts to find traditional Spanish villages which provide a great insight into local lifestyles and customs, or visit the older parts of the region’s towns to mix with the local people, and the same is true of any of the popular European holiday destinations. At the end of the day, it is not so much the destination that is key, but how the individual chooses to experience it.

In common with the French and the Greeks, it seems that the Spanish air traffic controllers are not happy bunnies either. It looks, however, as though their former threats to bring chaos to travellers into and out of Spain over the Easter period may come to nothing, and so those set to enjoy the celebrations of the Semana Santa, or Easter Week, can hopefully look forward to a hassle-free trip.

The current pay deal for Spain’s air traffic controllers is set to end just four days before Easter Sunday, on March 31st, and it is the prospect of pay reductions which could amount to 40% which have outraged many of the workers. With pressure from the Costa del Sol Tourist Board whose fears that a strike over the Easter period would devastate the industry and put the economy of provinces such as Malaga at risk, however, it is hoped that the planned industrial action will not now go ahead but that workers will use other ‘legal’ means of fighting their cause. Certainly the union for air traffic controllers (USCA) has indicated that services will continue as normal throughout the Easter holidays.

Revelations that some of Spain’s air traffic controllers are earning up to £800,000 per year (more than 50 times the average national wage) have incensed the country’s Minister for Development who has stated vehemently that he will not allow the situation to continue. It is perhaps not only the government and those directly involved in the tourist industry who feel that they are justified in their complaints, however. When you bear in mind that such high levels of earnings reflect on the airport taxes paid by air passengers who visit the country, taking control of the situation will surely benefit everyone concerned.

Times are Changing in Marbella: Headquarters of Ex-Marbella Mayor to be converted into an English School

For many years, the Club Financiero Inmobiliario – located on the main Ricardo Soriano Avenue – served as the “unofficial” headquarters of Marbella’s most controversial mayor: Jesus Gil. This symbol of the Gil era is where developers and town hall officials planned and agreed all urban related deals and projects for Marbella; one could say that it is in this building that Marbella’s downfall was orchestrated.

However, times are changing in Marbella. The new PGOU urban plan has been approved; this will result in increased investment in the area as well of peace of mind for most of the owners who bought properties in good faith and that, until now, were not sure whether their properties would be torn down for being illegal!

As a definite sign of change, the ex-mayors residence will now become an English School. The Gil family will be renting the premises to the British School Group; with schools in China, Russia and Malaysia, the group plans to open the new centre in September with applications being accepted as from March.

The idea is that the school will cater for children of all nationalities between the ages of 2 and 11; however, for the first year, there will only be classes for children aged 2 to 6. As the name suggests, the British school will follow the UK curriculum, at least until the age of 6; Spanish language classes will be introduced from this point.

For more information, please visit the British School website at www.bsm.org.es

It would be fair to say that over the years Marbella has not gained itself a reputation as being the most honest or legal of places – especially when it comes to buying property. Though many, many legal real estate deals take place every year and countless people purchase beautiful properties and are extremely happy with their new homes and lives in the sun, there are those that have slipped through the net. And though Marbella is now making every effort to clean up its act, the days of heady corruption have still left their mark on the Coast.

Most commonly, here are buildings, some occupied, some sold to owners unaware of their legal status, but built illegally back in the days where money across the table was the only building permission you needed to get your project off the ground. But it is a new day here on the Coast, the Marbella Town hall and the Junta de Andalucia (Andalucian Government) are doing everything they can to bring the legality back in line with the pride that is true of the real Spain.

The long awaited Marbella PGOU plan (urban plan) was finally approved by the Junta last week; with this new lease of life, Marbella is taking a marked step back to the respectable. The approval of the PGOU now means that 17,000 homes are now legalised and thousands of property owners can now sleep a little better. Additionally not only does this plan address the illegal homes that have been built but it also creates a specific guideline for project development – this extra step is rare and reflects how serious they are in bringing Marbella back to a level of respectability. Dealing with the problems that have occurred but also putting in procedures for the future.

Of course, as with anything, these plans have attracted controversy from some corners. Some local critics believe it may give developers a free pass to building transparently illegal projects. Those concerned with the environment are concerned that some projects have been built on protected land especially those on the beachfront. And there are some buildings that will not be legalized and some may be destroyed, which is the only other option, this is all still under discussion.

However amongst the controversy, putting aside the concerns of those who aren’t completely happy, there is no denying the fact that the Junta de Andalucia, the Marbella Town Hall and all those in power, are making a marked step towards cleaning up the mess made by others and that, for residents and visitors alike, surely, should be applauded.

The new terminal at Malaga airport will be ready to welcome its first passengers as from Easter of next year. The new infrastructure has cost an estimated 320 million Euros and will be able to attend to the needs of 9000 passengers per hour – double the actual figure.

The second runway which is being built will take a little longer to complete but is expected to be ready for the last quarter of 2010.

Here’s a few facts about the new airport:

179 Check in desks

48 departure gates (22 remote and 26 with robotic walkway)

385.000 square metres of surface area

Capacity to handle 7500 pieces of luggage every hour

All these changes and improvements to the airport infrastructure will make Malaga the 3rd most important airport on the Peninsula and position it in the same league as the main European airports.

The fact that the airport will be able to handle much larger volumes of passengers will hopefully have a positive effect on the local industry, especially tourism. This can only mean good news for the Coast.
